Wheeler and The Grace School: Building Community Through a New Summer Partnership

August 18, 2026

“From the moment they arrived, students were encouraged to share their voices, build connections, and participate in activities centered around outdoor exploration and community,” says Gerina Auguste, director of this summer’s inaugural Grace School at Wheeler Program.

The Grace School Summer at Wheeler was designed with students’ voices at the table, not simply for them,” she notes. “They helped choose and vote on the curriculum, activities, and speakers. They participated in civics and service learning, and even planned the schedule for our end-of-program celebration.”

“The opportunity to create an enriching summer experience where students could explore their identities, build community, and take an active role in their learning made for a natural partnership between Wheeler and The Grace School,” says Director of Equity, Community, and Belonging Princess Bomba P’16, P’18. “We have welcomed Grace School alumni to Wheeler for several years and have always maintained a successful and close-knit relationship with The Grace School community. The long-standing relationship, coupled with our knowledge of the incredible young people who attend The Grace School and deep appreciation for their diverse backgrounds and perspectives, were all factors that led us to the decision.”

That vision came to life in many ways throughout the summer. One particular highlight for Ms. Auguste was Culture Day, where students celebrated their cultures through food, attire, and story-sharing. “Seeing their pride, inclusiveness, and willingness to learn from one another was truly special,” she says.

Ms. Bomba adds that her hopes for the program were to create four weeks of exploration, math and literacy enrichment, cultural and identity affirmation, and leadership development, all in a fun environment. “Since completing our first summer together, the overwhelming response from the participants has been positive and meaningful.”

Ms. Auguste says it was especially inspiring to watch students take ownership of The Grace Summer community. “They formed new friendships, created organic mentorships, and learned that their voices truly mattered.”

The experience extended beyond The Grace School students; both Ms. Auguste and Ms. Bomba expressed appreciation for the Wheeler Upper Schoolers who served as classroom teachers. “They stepped into a brand new role with a mix of apprehension and excitement and ended the program as confident and experienced facilitators, teachers, curriculum designers, and youth developers. I am so proud of them!” shares Ms. Bomba.
