Fourth Annual Learning Differences Seminar
The Hamilton Institute presents the Fourth Annual Learning Differences Seminar, with Tiffany Hogan delivering the keynote address, “Supporting Language Comprehension at School and at Home.”
Recent legislation has emphasized support for word reading, with particular focus on early identification and support for children with dyslexia. However, language comprehension—equally critical for reading success—has received insufficient attention. This session will describe the research bases for systematic and explicit language assessment and instruction that must complement word reading instruction for children with dyslexia.
In addition, participants will learn about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a learning disability affecting language comprehension that occurs in 7-10% of children, the same prevalence as dyslexia. Critically, DLD and dyslexia co-occur in 50-90% of cases, making language support essential for reading success.
This session is designed for general education teachers, special educators, reading specialists, speech-language pathologists, interventionists, administrators, and family members. Attendees will learn evidence-based, practical, and actionable steps for enhancing language comprehension in classrooms and at home, with specific guidance for supporting children with dyslexia and DLD.
