Vocal Music at Wheeler

From preschool through Upper School, our concert halls, classrooms, courtyards and stairwells resound with Wheeler students’ singing. With a spirit of play, experimentation, and collaboration, students at Wheeler develop their voices and technique to share the joy of music with the whole community. At Wheeler, we believe that making music together is as elemental to students’ learning, and their humanity, as any subject they learn at school.

Our youngest singers engage in song-based games, rhymes and folk songs through our music program at the Nest.  Singing continues as a pillar of their education in Lower School Music, where our young musicians explore their voices through different pedagogies, all with singing at their core.  With many opportunities to develop their sound and perform, young singers will gain the confidence in themselves to take their music to the next level.

In Middle School, students have the opportunity to use their voices in a number of ways. Whether singing alongside their classmates in general music, performing with their fellow singers and instrumentalists in show band, singing a solo in jazz band, or belting out a show-stopper in the Middle School musical, Middle Schoolers can continue to develop their musicality and personal style as their voices continue to grow and change.

Singing in Upper School is all about empowering our students as they cultivate their individual sound and artistry. Expanding upon our course offerings in Middle School, Upper Schoolers can participate in a number of musical ensembles, ranging from Enrichment classes like Chamber Music, Rock Band and Chorus, to curricular classes like Vocal Study and 18 Wheelers, our award-winning a cappella group. In whatever ways students choose to engage in our vocal program, singers will graduate with a strong understanding of the power of their voice and a love of music that will carry them into their musical future.
