About the Hamilton Institute

The Hamilton Institute at Wheeler supports children with language-based learning differences as they develop confidence, skills, and a joy of learning. Through accessible resources, education, training, and advocacy, the Institute empowers families and educators who help children with learning differences thrive.

A Legacy of Learning and Literacy

Within its nearly 40-year history, The Hamilton School at Wheeler has affected the lives of more than 400 students — students who may not have found success in traditional classrooms. Through structured literacy instruction and under the care of specially-trained faculty, children at The Hamilton School improve as readers and writers. Beyond academic successes, though, Hamilton fosters in its students confidence, curiosity, advocacy, and a joy of learning.

Expertise

It is believed that 20% of children experience reading-related problems in school. Hamilton’s approach to teaching students with language-based learning differences, specifically dyslexia, works. However, to maintain low student:teacher ratios, a Hamilton education is available to a limited number of children. In addition to the small class sizes, the high cost of tuition makes a Hamilton education out of reach to many in need.

Extending Impact

The Hamilton Institute extends the proven expertise of the Hamilton School beyond its classrooms and into the wider community. Through services such as free literacy screenings and consultations, professional training workshops, student programming, educational opportunities, and curated resources, the Institute helps more children benefit from Hamilton’s decades of specialization and experience with evidence-informed practices.
