Forest Fridays

It is now widely agreed that — even more than knowledge acquisition — success in life depends upon skills such as work ethic, collaboration, persistence, and executive function skills (allowing us to plan, implement and complete tasks). The research makes clear that we learn these skills best in early life by spending time playing and learning with peers, exploring outdoors, generally having time to work things out. Researchers are now building on that with a “PDF” framework (playtime, downtime, family time) for children of all ages, including teenagers. All across the world, outdoor preschools, adventure playgrounds, and other self-directed experiences are nurturing the early development of key competencies that support the intellectual rigors of learning that are required (and desired!) as children grow.

To build on an already robust curriculum of both structured and unstructured play, we introduce “Forest Fridays” at The Wheeler Farm. This year, Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten children will take the bus with their friends out to the Farm on periodic Fridays to explore nature, play together, develop independence, build creativity “muscles” and extend imagination.

See photos and read about the program on our Forest Fridays webpage.
