Organic Infill Replaces Rubber

Over the summer, Wheeler has replaced its crumb rubber turf play areas on our Providence campus with a blended organic infill of cork and coconut fiber.

The “Corkonut” field will address both environmental and health concerns and, according to the installer Greenplay Organics, will be the first of its kind in Rhode Island. The organic infill replicates the evaporative cycle of natural grass thereby reducing the heat signature of the turf and, unlike crumb rubber, the organic infill can be recycled at the end of its life as a planting medium or a soil additive.

"Given the growing anxiety about
crumb rubber infill and the excellence of organic options, this was a great opportunity for Wheeler to be ahead of the curve on a potential safety issue," said Head Dan Miller.
