Honorable Mention Flash Fiction -- “The Wolf”

By Alex Mirrer ’20
The Wolf

I hadn’t left my room. His words pounded in my head: It’s once upon a time, yet again. Once upon a time... Once upon a time... I can’t remember what came next. I need to remember what came next. Should I take the path of needles or the path of pins. Needles or pins. Needles and pins. He knocked on my door. I slammed the Book shut. He took off his coat, grinned. Whisky hung on his breath, then I hung on his breath and the tears kept coming after he left. That was Saturday. Sunday was worse. He came back, but I was ready, phone in hand, a hunter down the street. 911. There was still enough time for a rescue, especially since he required a strip tease. I was nearly indecent when they fill his stomach with lead. Funny: shot through, he didn’t scare me. But the Book told me that women were supposed to fear the gore. It lied. The Book said my hunters would have their way with me for killing the beast. That was true. What else is true? Am I alone? No. Shhh. He’s here.
