Welcome to Performing Arts at Wheeler! As a department, we strive to nurture each student’s special talent and enthusiasm, provide the opportunity for students to explore and develop a passion for performing arts, and through performance, raise the community’s awareness of the performing arts.

The variety of materials, teaching modalities, and media presented by our teachers ensures that all students have an opportunity to explore, pursue, and succeed at activities in music and drama.

Students are encouraged to learn from and with each other through the ensemble experience, the underpinning of our program. Materials of other cultures are utilized to broaden the experience and awareness of students and their audiences. Some courses in the Upper School also serve as community outreach programs in which students perform for a variety of religious, cultural, educational, and charitable organizations each year. These opportunities help students value the diverse cultures of their world, encourage respect for all people, encourage community service, and heighten performance skills.

Private Music Lessons
Wheeler is excited to be working in partnership with The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School. The RI Philharmonic Music School provides access to private lesson instruction for our students at Wheeler daily after school from 3:15pm through 5:30pm. Wheeler students who cannot attend lessons during after school hours are welcome to register for lessons at the Carter Center for Music Education in East Providence. The Carter Center is the new home of the Rhode Island Philharmonic organization and is a state of the art music education facility.

“The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School is devoted to engaging the people of Southern New England as lifelong listeners, teachers, learners, creators and performers of music. We are the only professional orchestra to officially designate music education and performance as equal priorities, and are the largest combined professional orchestra and music school in the United States.”  from a letter to Wheeler Families by Executive Director David Beauchesne & Music School Director Annette Mozzoni
