Students at the Wheeler School have the opportunity to study the classical guitar in a multi-level program. The three-level program includes a beginners class aimed at developing reading and guitar technique skills, an intermediate class which builds on the skills developed in the first year course, and an audition-only Performance level course.
The goal of the program is to instill a strong musical awareness and knowledge in the student, coupled with an advanced ability to interpret musical language and a highly developed set of technical skills. The skills required to perform in an ensemble are consciously instilled in the students through in-class exercises and critiques. At all levels, students work simultaneously on solo and ensemble repertoire. Master classes are a feature of the guitar program. In recent years, students have had the opportunity to work with artists Benjamin Verdery, Andrew Zohn, and Michael Nicolelle and with faculty from Yale University and the New England Conservatory. Graduates of the Wheeler guitar program may or may not elect to study music at the college level, but they will have formed a life-long connection to music as played on the guitar.
