Welcome to the Wheeler Upper School. As a division of 350 students and 50 faculty members, we take seriously the school’s motto “The Spirit Giveth Life.” It is our belief that giving students opportunities to take risks, embrace challenges, and find great joy in the learning process is as important as what a student learns. We hope that our students, with the support of teachers who are experts in their fields, will not only graduate with a strong foundation of skills but that they will develop interests that will sustain them well beyond high school.

Our program is academically rigorous, artistically rich and academically competitive All students take Unity and Diversity, a multicultural program unique to our Upper School that focuses on the legal, educational and societal implications of socially significant differences. Across disciplines, we encourage our students to think analytically, act compassionately, and become active participants in the learning process

We offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of co-curricular experiences. Through our Aerie program, we connect students with passionate interests to academic mentors from the surrounding colleges and the Providence community. Through a combination of classroom work and community service, our required Community Action Program focuses on educating our students to be thoughtful and contributing life-long citizens. Both in and out of the classroom our program is designed to provide venues for exploration and growth and to expose students to new ideas and ways of thinking. Students build strong working relationships with teachers, advisors, and class deans. Opportunities exist for them to assume a number of leadership roles as members of clubs, class officers, and participants on one of our many academic and athletic teams.

Program Spotlight: Elective Course Offerings
About our Electives
Our elective courses in the Upper School provide faculty members with the opportunity to develop curriculum based on their own areas of interest and expertise.  Elective courses in the English, history and science departments allow students to see a teacher's subject-area passion unfold.

Elective course offerings for each department are listed below.  To read the full course descriptions, see the Upper School Course Catalog in the downloads section of this page.
